Gas Safe Registration is a Must

Gas Safety

A recent court case involving illegal gas works has highlighted the need for complete gas training and the correct registration. A man in Staffordshire was pretending to be gas safe registered, and therefore putting the lives of everyone at risk by working on their gas appliances. Mark Austin was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive after he issued a landlord’s gas safety record with a false number for his gas safety registration number.

The HSE discovered that Mr Austin had installed a boiler and a gas hob back in July 10. The work was not completed properly. All of the pipework was too small which resulted in numbers problems. If the gas hobs were on when the boiler was switched on the burners would turn off. The unlit burners would then turn back on once the boiler had been turned off. This could have easily resulted in an explosion.

Not Being Qualified or Registered Could Land You in Jail

The Gas Safe Register was alerted of the unsafe gas works by the owner of the property that Mr Austin had worked on. The HSE then investigated the incident and discovered that this wasn’t the first time that Mr Austin had claimed to be properly registered. They found 23 other gas safety records and therefore he was eventually sentenced to 12 months in prison, which was suspended for 18 months. Mr Austin has also been ordered to complete 200 hours of community service, unpaid and must pay £1000 in costs.

If you want to work on gas works you must have the right qualifications and be on the Gas Safe Register. There are some excellent gas training courses available including the F-Gas Regulations which is the minimum legal requirement for anyone working on air conditioning or refrigeration.

The City and Guilds 2079 lasts for three days and is suitable for plumbers, engineers and technicians or anyone looking to cross train. If you would like to take the minimum level of gas training for refrigeration and air conditioning consider this excellent three day course offered by the City and Guilds.
