What Is A PAT Testing Course?

PAT Testing is simply a process by which portable electrical appliances are checked periodically to see if they are safe. It is extremely easy to get bogged down in the detail, however you should remember that a PAT Test is simply a 'safety check' on a piece of electrical equipment. Believe it ot not, a simple visual check can often be all that is needed to identify an electrical faul assuming of course that you know what to look for!

PAT Testing is not about placing aesthetically pleasing bar codes on electrical equipment or preparing complicated and detailed databases of all your appliances, it is about checking your equipment to see if it is safe and taking it out of useor getting it fixed if there is something wrong with it.

Can Anybody Do PAT Testing?

Although there are a few important things you need to understand, PAT testing is 95% common sense, therefore if you have enough of it you can perform PAT testing. You need to be competent, and for that you need to attend a PAT Testing course. You do not need to be a qualified electrician to attend or complete electrical testing course, we start right at the beginning so that you learn from the ground up. A bit of background electrical or PAT Test knowledge will be a help, however the City and Guilds course has been designed so that individuals with no prior knowledge or understanding can attend the course and reach the required standard.

Will Attending This PAT Testing Course Make Me Competent?

Yes! This PAT Testing course comes with a formal nationally recognised qualification, the City & Guilds 2377-20. This course focuses on the IEE Code of Practice and the City and Guilds course literature/examination. On completion of this popular one or two day PAT Testing course (depending upon venue), candidates will be able to perform everyday PAT testing and keep records to satisfy the Electricity at Work Regulations.

What PAT Testing Equipment Do I Need?

You'll probably realise by now that we believe in keeping it simple. You can spend £1000+ on a PAT Tester, but you don't need to. Of course, you will at some stage need access to a PAT Testing machine, however a good quality robust and accurate machine is all you need. Trade Skills Ltd ensure industry standard testing machines are available on training courses. We can also provide you with unbiased information on the best PAT Testing machines. You will need a few decent screwdrivers and some PAT Testing Labels, however we can help you with those too if required.
