Course overview

The City & Guilds 2391-10 Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations Certificate is a qualification that many electricians aspire to and is one of the most highly regarded qualifications in the industry. The course itself is specifically designed to prepare delegates for both their written examination and their practical assessment that determines the candidates’ success on the course. It is designed for experienced practicing electricians and electrical professionals to be able to carry out regular testing and inspecting as well as being able to complete written Periodic Inspection Reports. The course refers to both Guidance Note 3 as well as the current edition of the wiring regulations throughout the course.

Who is this qualification for?

The City & Guilds 2391 qualification, is a level 3 qualification and therefore it is assumed that you already a level of competence in electrical installation. It is suited to those who want to able to carry out periodic inspections in industrial, commercial and domestic premises. The candidate will also be required to complete and evaluate Periodic Inspection Reports (PIRs) and schedules of test reports by being able to carry out testing using the correct methods and sequences.

The City & Guilds 2391 Certificate in Inspection Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations training course provides delegates with thorough and intensive tutoring that gives the delegates the knowledge to be able to undertake calculations using typical and often found every day scenarios. The final written exam is central to this course so therefore a significant amount of time is spent prepping the candidates for this event. This is one of the reasons why our pass rate is the highest in the country. The remainder of the course covers the technical calculations and the underpinning knowledge required to gain a complete understanding of the inspection and testing processes.

- The Statutory and non-statutory requirements for testing electrical installations
- The inherent dangers of electrical testing
- The precautions required for ensuring the safety of personnel
- The Initial Verification of installations
- How to follow the regulations regarding the visual inspection of electrical installations
- Periodic inspection and testing requirements and procedures
- Suitable Test Equipment and their application
- The correct sequence for carrying out electrical testing
- How to evaluate test results and how to interpret the findings
- Completing periodic inspection reports

The City & Guilds 2391-10 is assessed in two sections. The first is a three hour practical assessment, which takes place at one of our training centres and comprises of 4 individual assessments. The second is a one and half hour written examination that takes place at a time allocated by City & Guilds that is usually scheduled to take place in the evening on a number of occasions during the year. Please note that the written examination is marked externally by the City & Guilds, so the results are not normally available straight away, 8 to 10 weeks is usual time frame for the results to be published after the exam is completed.

Progress routes

After this course most students undertake the City & Guilds 2391-20: Certificate in the Design, Erection and Verification of Electrical Installations, to go further with their training. If this is the case than we recommend completing both courses as a complete package ensures that the candidate has the practical experience as well as a thorough knowledge of testing and inspecting electrical work.
